Routines and Procedures
Entering The Classroom:
- Greet Miss Cleveland at the door with a handshake as you enter the classroom.
- Gather materials from your folder slot (folder, spiral notebook, pencil).
- Follow directions on the board and pick up bell work.
- Sit in your assigned seat and work on your bell work.
- Once the final bell rings, you will have 5 minutes to finish your work. Miss Cleveland will be walking around the room to answer any questions.
Take Attendance:
- A number will be assigned to each student alphabetically.
- When it is time for attendance, Miss Cleveland will say, “Count off!”
- Class counts off starting with one. When there is a missing number, Miss Cleveland will mark it down and the count off continues.
- By the end of week two, once the procedure becomes routine, Miss Cleveland will mark a student late if they are not paying attention and forget to call off their number.
Getting Student's Attention:
- If Miss Cleveland needs the attention of the class, she will make a vocal percussive noise.
- When you hear it, repeat it back, stop what you are doing, and silently look at her for further instructions.
- If a student continues to talk, Miss Cleveland will follow the process of the Support System. Click here for a further explanation on this method by Tom Carter.
- If a student ignores Miss Cleveland’s reminder to support, they will be moved to another seat for the rest of the class period.
Using The Bathroom:
- If you need to use the bathroom during class, hold up two fingers and continue with class.
- When Miss Cleveland sees you, she will either signal that you may leave by nodding or she will shake her head signaling you to wait for a better time.
- If Miss Cleveland nods, write your name and the time on the Bathroom Sign-Out Sheet before you leave. When you return from the bathroom, write the time in the last column of the sheet before quietly rejoining the class. Click here for an example sign-out sheet.
Turning In Forms/Money*:
- When turning in forms or money, put it in a sealed envelope with your name clearly printed on it, and drop it in the lock box. Click here to see an example of a lock box.
- The lock box is a large, locked, metal box with a slit near the top, similar to a postal box. It sits just inside the door to Miss Cleveland’s office.
- Extra envelopes can be found beside the lock box.
- If a student tries to turn in forms or money directly to Miss Cleveland, she will remind them of the procedure.
Materials Check:
- On a daily basis, Miss Cleveland will call out, “pencil, folder, spiral notebook!”
- Quickly pull out these materials and hold them up.
- Miss Cleveland will check row by row to make sure everybody is prepared with their materials, marking down those who do not.
- If a student does not have their materials, they will not receive that day’s points for preparedness.
- However, the student should not be held back from participation in class. Therefore, they should borrow a pencil or paper from their neighbor as needed. The neighbor should also share their music,
Dismissing The Class:
- If the bell rings while the class is singing or somebody is talking, wait for Miss Cleveland to dismiss you.
- Every minute of class time is important, so do not pack up before Miss Cleveland dismisses the class.
- If a student begins to pack up, Miss Cleveland will follow the process of the support system. Click here for a further explanation on this method by Tom Carter.
- Put your materials in your folder slot as you exit the classroom.
