Personal Style of Classroom Management
Classroom management looks different in each classroom. My classroom management style will reflect my personality and how it affects the elements that I choose to emphasize. As discussed in the previous section, I place a strong value on the necessity of a safe environment for my students. Despite my years of private lessons and experiences performing, I occasionally become self-conscious about my voice or musical abilities. An example of what might cause my insecurity would be when I am around musicians that are talented in ways that I am not, such as belting or playing instruments. My students may have similar insecurities, which are escalated when other students in the class are being critical of their peers. As I have personal experience with being unjustly critiqued by peers, I understand the need for a safe environment. Unsupportiveness will not be tolerated in my classroom, to ensure that all students will feel safe and welcome.
My desire for consistency and engaging material in my classroom ties in well with my personal style. I am a creature of habit and prefer when life has a set, consistent routine. Use of routines will simply my planning of lessons, teaching, and benefit my student’s ease of learning. Selecting engaging material to teach my classes, including favorable song selections, will ideally limit the actual amount of discipline I need to use. Actually, I have found that not only is there less need for discipline, but more learning is actually done when students are interested in the material.
